JAF – Two Guys. Together since 2011.
After successfully completing our first two courses while still having smiles on the faces of our guests, we could see the finish line of our very first dairy-free dinner party. One more thing: dessert! What about a fresh fruit sorbet in a champagne bath with a hint of mint? Sorbets are a simple combination of fresh or frozen fruit with sugar. They're also the perfect dairy-free alternative for ice. We've chosen honey strawberry sorbet with a touch of mint. Here's what you need to feed eight little dessert fans: - 1 kg of frozen raspberries - 1 cup of sugar - 1 cup of water - 2 tea spoons honey - a handful of mint - 2-3 leafs of galantine - 1 bottle champagne About one kilo of fruit is perfect to make one liter of sorbet. A little more or less is fine. Puree the raspberries, add two tea spoons of honey and a handful of mint, chopped into small pieces. Finally you add a little sugar, and that's already everything that needs to be done. The easiest way to add sugar is to make a simple sugar syrup upfront. Cook one cup of sugar and water together until the sugar is dissolved and let it cool. Remember, though, that freezing dulls sweet flavors, so you want the base to taste slightly too sweet before freezing it. Last but not least: put the sorbet in the freezer and let it cool for some hours before serving. For the bath of champagne, all you need to do is to fill one bottle of champagne in a bowl and mix it with two to three leafs of galantine. Stir until the galantine has dissolved. Then divide the champagne evenly in your serving glasses and let them cool for 3-4 hours in the fridge to get a more solid mass. Before serving, cut balls of sorbet and place them carefully on your champagne bath. Add a mint leaf, maybe even a small piece of dark chocolate, et voilà. Smakelijk! Guten Appetit!
More and more people lately discover they have a food allergy. Does that mean you can't enjoy the pleasures of delicious dining anymore? Oh, hell no! Mid last year I've gone in a state of constant tiredness, pretty much always being nauseous, having headaches, even crawling on the floor from incredible stomach pains and ending up in the hospital. Turned out I have a lactose intolerance, an allergy for milk products. Which nowadays seems to be quite common, though still quite an obstacle for cooking and going on a restaurant. My god, milk is in everything: E-VE-RY-THING. Good thing we have really great friends that are open for some creativity in the kitchen. We decided that every one or two months we'll come together for a dinner that makes nobody feel bad. Also, it's the perfect occasion to drink wine together. Because: what's a dinner party without? :-) Meet: The perfect dairy-free dinner party. The party kicked-off at our place. What the hell should we cook for eight people? Well, we actually really quickly found some inspiring recipes in books and the WWW. Here's what made it to the very first dairy-free diner party menu (click on it to get to the recipe): Starter: Cucumber lasagne with a paprika cashew paste and avocado filling Main course: Codfish with creamy zucchini white wine sauce and pine nut rice Dessert: Sorbet ice in a bath of champagne with a hint of mint Nobody went home hungry, nor thirsty and the whole night was dairy-free. Just the way we like it. Enjoy!
Since Jeroen found out he has a pretty nasty lactose intolerance (he's allergic to milk products) we started to become experts in cooking dairy-free. For one of our dairy-free dinner parties we made this delicious starter that we discovered in the 'Vegan for Youth'-book from Attila Hildmann. Here's all you need to put it on a plate yourself: Cucumber lasagne with a paprika cashew paste with avocado filling What you need for two as a main course (times two in our case as a starter for eight): - 1/2 cucumber - 1 tablespoon walnut oil - a pinch of seasalt For the paprika cashew paste: - 100g red paprika - 1/4 chili pepper - 180g unsalted cashews - a pinch of kurkuma - seasalt - black pepper For the avocado filling: - 2 avocados - 1 tablespoon of chopped dill - 1/2 tablespoon lemon juice - 1 tablespoon walnut oil - seasalt - black pepper For decoration: - some dill - roasted pine nuts How to? Wash the cucumber and cut in thin slices (around 2mm thick). Put walnut oil and seasalt on it. Wash the paprika and chili. Remove pits. Next, put all ingredients for the paprika cashew paste in a blender. Mix till you get a creamy paste and spice it up with salt and pepper. Slice the avocados in half. Remove pit and cut the avocado in small cubes. Add the other ingredients for the filling and add salt and pepper. Now start building your little lasagne tower! Place cucumber slices on the plate, cover it with some of the paprika cashew paste, put cucumber slices on top and cover that again with some of the avocado filling, ... you know the drill. At the end: decorate with a bit of dill and roasted pine nuts (we like to put a LOT of them on top). Finish! Bon appétit!
During our stay in one of the most beautiful hotels in the world, we just had to use its infinity pool for a refreshing session of Les Mills Bodyjam! In May 2015 we've enjoyed an awesome holiday in Bali. As already mentioned in our These Hotels Are Sick-post, we're quite the fans of the Hanging Gardens Resort in Ubud, Bali. F booked a few nights in this little paradise as an anniversary present. Woohooh! You can imagine the thrilledness when figuring it out at arrival. And when you're staying in a dream destination - Bodyjam and dance addicts as we are -, you just NEED to show some hot dance moves. But don't worry, the refreshing water of the infinity pool kept us cool. We hit the pool for the work-out at the early morning around 6AM for Bodyjam 72 (The Lawnmower - Aryay). You would imagine you could do this unnoticed when getting up that early. Guess again... An applause of crew and guests followed. :-) So, what's the next dreamy Bodyjam destination where we can perform some of the by Gandalf Archer choreographed moves? Stay tuned!
This week we had the pleasure to attend the Elisabeth musical, also known as the most successful German musical, in the Essener Colosseum. We were backstage, onstage, frontstage and are pleased to report to you right here, right now. The very talented cast of Elisabeth just returned from their tour in Shanghai where they performed the 'other' story of world known Swiss empress Sissi 40 times in, yes... German. 14 megatrucks packed with 664 costumes, 150 wigs, 125 pair of shoes and the full scenery brought the Elisabeth musical back to Germany where the piece will run in Essen till the 22nd of March. Later onwards they will move to München. Livekritik and the production behind the show invited us for a very pleasant evening with Elisabeth. At arrival we were welcomed with a backstage tour. What kind of team is behind the technic, the costumes and the scenery? How do the actors manage to have a costume-switch in less than 10 seconds (Elisabeth for example switches her costume 16 times)? All our questions got answered. And now the impressive world of musical hasn't got any secrets for us. Meanwhile #backstage, spinning around at #ElisabethMusical... #musical Ein von JAF (@jaftime) gepostetes Video am 27. Feb 2015 um 9:46 Uhr After the interesting tour, a spin onstage, a glass of champagne and snacks it was time to get to our seats. Lights! And action! The tones of 'Alle Tanzen Mit Dem Tot' kicked of a show that we both now give two well deserved thumbs up. We let ourselves get guided through the dark history of Elisabeth, performed by Roberta Valentini, and her secret flirt with death. During the show we mingled in the TweetUp via #ElisabethMusical and expressed our very positive impression on the musical. Cause, to be completely honest, there are some amazing voices in the cast, accompanied by the impressive orchestra guided by Paul Christ. Our favorite voice of the night is the one of Mark Seibert who performes Der Tot and sounds a lot like the very talented Belgian singer/songwriter Udo. J had goosebumps during the full song where grown-up Prince Rudolf sings with Der Tot. F's favorite song is 'Ich gehör nur mir', which he is now singing ever since. When the curtain fell, we were invited to have a chat with the main actors who talked about their nights in China and about being back in front of a German crowd. What a night. It probably doesn't come as a surprise if we tell you the Elisabeth musical is highly recommendable. The 28-people cast still plays in Essen till the 22nd of March and than moves to München. Check out the website for the full tourplan and tickets. Meanwhile we're already looking forward to our next night out. JafJaf!
Mango surprises with its so far best H.E. by Mango November Men's Lookbook Mango has already released a few cookbooks earlier this year including their A/W14 Menswear lookbook and their A/W14 urban suiting collection. Both have been played quite safe on terms of style and looks. This november lookbook however is defintely one of the most fashion forward collections Mango has released so far. We are beyond impressed. For us, Mango has always been very traditional, mainstream and quite Spanish inspired in their H.E. by Mango collection. Well, this lookbook is different. It's high fashion but still not over the top. All styles shown in the lookbook are individually styled and brought together in remarkable outfits. We are really surprised and welcome this new look of the H.E. collection. Everything is clean cut, futuristic and minimalistic. The mix of tailoring with sports influenced pieces follows the actual fashion trend and is executed nicely. For us a ready to wear and feel good collection. Difficult to choose a favourite. What's yours? JafJaf!
In 10 Years there will be a windowless airplane where the sky is the limit. Imagine sitting in a flight cabin where the windows are display screens, relaying a choice of views from around the aircraft. Sounds great and this company is working on it. The Center for Process Innovation (CPI), a British technology research company is working on the next big step in air transportation. They are aiming to replace the windows from passenger planes with touch-screens that extend along the plane’s entire length and display the view from outside through cameras mounted on the plane’s exterior. According to CPI, windows are one of the greatest sources of unnecessary weight in passenger planes. Solid walls are stronger and allow the walls to be built thinner as well. The OLED screens that replace the windows would display the view outside and allow passengers to select entertainment and stewardess service. Nice side effect: less weight means less fuel consumption which results again in lower CO2 emissions. Thumps Up! A bright technology to look forward to and a whole new flight eperience. No need to look through these tiny little airplane windows any longer. We already see ourselves about to land in New York City with a stunning panoramic city view by night or passing by the Mount Everest. 2024 can come. JafJaf! Extra designed OLED screens will show passengers the world outside. Via the screens passengers can ask for service, see all flight information and enjoy internet access and media players.
DriveNow let's you shop until you drop at the Designer Outlet! As you already know, we're big fans of DriveNow. Recently, the car sharing agency launched an interesting collaboration with the McArthurGlen Designer Outlet in Roermond, the Netherlands. How does it work? Easy! Just hop in a DriveNow MINI or BMW at choice and book the partner offer via the DriveNow menu in the car. Depending on how many people you are, the costs vary from 50€ for one person up to 65€ for four people. Next to that, every person receives a 15€ voucher at the information desk when arrived in the Outlet Center. That voucher can, by the way, be spent in every store in the center and comes without a minimum to be spend. So... you actually pay 5 € for the six hour rent, including 140 free kilometers when you go on a shopping tour with a group of four. There's definitely not a cheaper and more comfortable way to get to your designer destination. We certainly liked the offer and tried it ourselves last Sunday afternoon. We booked a MINI Countryman in Dusseldorf, started off with a sporty Sunday BodyJam work-out at the gym and continued our trip further to Roermond. Arrived at the Designer Outlet, we picked up our voucher cards and were ready to attack! From all major sports brands like adidas, Nike, Puma and Reebok, to labels like Boss, Strellson, Diesel, Ralph Lauren, Denham. You name it, you'll find it. Next to that, the center has loads of places to have a coffee or eat something when you just feel like having a little break. Our catch of the Sunday? A pair of cool adidas sneakers for F and a Reebok cross-fit training pants for J. All in the trunk and back to Dusseldorf! For more details about booking your own DriveNow shopping spree, go and check out the DriveNow-Blog. JafJaf!
Pharrell Williams x Adidas Originals first phase available now. Pharrell Williams has become one of the major American music producer to launch a design range this week with trainers and sportswear for Adidas. Now, Adidas has unveiled the first two pieces from its collaboration with musician and producer Pharrell Williams, which launched in shops on Saturday, 20th. Three more product releases will follow in October, November and December. The total collection will consist of a series of limited edition pieces with the draw on items from the sportswear brand's collection of classic designs. The first two are a version of Adidas' Superstar track jacket in leather and the brand's classic Stan Smith shoes, which will come in three colors: blue, red and black. "The equal sign is the leitmotif of the collaboration's logo," said Adidas in an official statement about the logo for the collaboration. "Next to the Adidas Originals trefoil, two of the iconic three stripes transform into a bold equal sign with the third being the name of Pharrell Williams," the brand explained further. Adidas also said that the products in the collaboration would "revolve around Pharrell's idea of equality," but did not explain how this had been applied to the jacket and trainers. Release Date: Available Now! - Store: www.adidas.com/pharrellwilliams Adidas first announced its collaboration with Pharell at the beginning of this year, but is not the only brand to be working with the producer. In July, Pharrell unveiled a collection of clothing for G-Star RAW with fabrics made from materials, created using waste plastic collected from the sea. At the moment it seems that everything the great producer/singer touches is meant to be very succesful. From his Oscar-winning 'Happy' song which turned into an anthem earlier this year, to multiple magazine covers. For sure one of the men of 2014. Stay tuned for more. JafJaf!
Ready for cruising through next Summer in style? Have a look at the electric MINI Superleggera Vision concept! As announced earlier in Spring this year, this exclusive interpretation of an electric open-top two-seater was created by MINI and Touring Superleggera, the stylish couch builder from Milan. The MINI Superleggera Vision is on the one hand a classic roadster, a compact and agile two-seater, expressing the most minimalist and emotional style of motoring; and on the other hand its electric drivetrain gives the car distinctly modern driving dynamics. The perfectly balanced proportions indicate at first glance what the electrically powered MINI has to offer in terms of a driving experience: the stretched bonnet, long wheelbase and cool, short overhangs convey pure driving fun. As in every MINI, the wheels are set widely on the body, promising a high degree of agility. The passenger cell is slightly set back, further underscoring the car's dynamic impression. The result is a car of classic beauty that is also state of the art. And we sure like it... a lot! This all is still in a concept phase, but as reactions are mainly very positive, BMW announced production could be something of the near future. Fingers crossed! Can you already imagine yourself taking this baby for a spin? JafJaf!
Our little boy's dream becomes reality with the Star Wars house, designed by MOON HOON Architects. Korean architecture firm MOON HOON has developed the one and only ‘Star Wars house’ for a family in Yongin-si. The fantasy home, existing out of three floors pays a visual homage to Star Wars while also acknowledging the client’s childhood dream of being an astronaut. The home features an angled concrete facade, relieved with thin stripes and boxy windows. The interior is very bright and skeletal, making use of natural light and woods to create a spacious effect for the inhabitants. Enjoy a sneaky look inside and, yes, may the force be with you! G-Star RAW and Pharrell Williams are getting 'Happy' for the sea Pharrell has collaborated with fashion brand G-Star RAW on a new collection using recycled marine plastic to help save the oceans. The Fall-Winter 2014 men's and womenswear collection titled 'G-Star RAW for the Oceans,' a collaboration between Bionic Yarn, the Vortex Project and Parley for the Oceans, was first announced in February this year, with Pharrell Williams curating the line. The key to the collection is the Bionic Yarn, a fiber created from recycled plastic harvested from the ocean. This is the first time the fabric has been incorporated into jeans. This first full collection has directly also used 10 tons of the recycled ocean plastic. Pieces include the aforementioned denim as well as bomber jackets, boilersuits, trench coats, shirts, t-shirts and caps, all featuring the Bionic Yarn. The dark blue and black clothing also features a new 'Otto, the Octopus'-motif which appears throughout the collection (even hidden in the reverse of some fabrics). The G-Star RAW for the Oceans collection is hitting G-Star stores and the online shop now. Blub! JafJaf!
Karl Lagerfeld wears BEATS X CHANEL headphones during Paris Fashion Week. There has been much said and written about it, but the BEATS X CHANEL headphones are coming anyway! During the Paris Fashion Week they were seen on the catwalk and will now join the exclusive circle of Chanel gadgets. The headset will shortly be available for a small amount of € 5,000 Euro across Chanel stores worldwide. The headphones are designed with a strong Chanel aesthetic. The signature quilted leather upper, the Chanel logo on the earpieces and of course a matching Chanel pouch. In the past, Monster has collaborated with Hublot and Crystal Roc to create some unique headsets and the collaboration with Chanel cements their status as an industry forerunner. With Swizz Beatz and Karl Largerfeld himself seen flaunting the Chanel headphones, it was only a matter of time until they would be released. See the photos of the BEATS X CHANEL luxury headphone that might be the right company for you here. JafJaf!
September might be too early to decide what's the best song of the year. Nevertheless, Sia with 'Chandelier' does have a great shot at winning that title. Months after 'Chandelier' has been released we're still singing it out & proud while cruising on the German roads. And most of the time, we're even tempted to replay the song two to three times. Which you normally only do with songs from Britney S. and Christina A, right? It gets better... The singer from down-under recorded a new version of 'Chandelier' which will be released on iTunes next week. The new version strips down the whole track, leaving it up to her incredible voice and a piano. We're not sure which version we like the most if we're honest. When listening to the intimate piano version, we want to have the radio edit to listen to as the next track, with again the piano version as the one after. Which makes our singing routine of course quite confusing. Anyway, you can believe us that it's quite amazing. Or don't believe us and just listen. JafJaf!
After the breaking Alexander Wang H&M news earlier this year, the Swedish retailer now releases the first images. The collaboration with the incredibly famous designer stays true to Wang’s fashion forward sportswear aesthetic. Expect a dark selection of athletic-inspired gear with a rough focus on boxing. Say hello to neoprene, tech jersey, leather blocking and toned-down colors. Not so toned-down though are the large WANG-prints on eyewear, sweatshirts and shorts. These should give the collection a kind of underground street wear sensibility but are sometimes a bit too much for us. Maybe JAF would be a suggestion from our side. We do look forward to wearing the incredibly cool gray puffer jacket from the Alexander Wang H&M collection, hitting stores in November. JafJaf!
When it comes to a modern classy style in men's fashion, Boss Orange is one of the labels that really meets most of our expectations. Next to Boss Black, Hugo by Hugo Boss and Boss Green, the 'Orange' Autumn/Winter 2014 styles breathe a certain 'whatever' while still looking like you're straight from the catwalk. A kind of out-of-bed-look that comes with a au-natural but looks hot as hell. The brand mixed and matched shiny and matte textiles to create a more mysterious look & feel and we sure like it. Hugo Boss presented its fall/winter 2014 campaign fronted by British model Harvey Newton. Giving the collection a rock ‘n roll flair, Harvey brings a new spirit to Boss’ leather outerwear, fitted knitwear and smart separates. Our favorite: the oh-so-beatiful leather jacket! JafJaf!
We're gonna go back in time! Did you know that J has a history as a popstar? Back in 2010, when he was working as a TV-host for a music channel, the question popped-up to release an own single. J, who previously participated in the Belgian version of X-Factor didn't hesitate a minute and dove into a music studio in The Netherlands, where he worked with the incredibly talented Rocketeers. A first single for MINNO was born: Dreaming. Hey, don't blame the boy for kissing a girl. He kinda liked it, the taste of her cherry chopstick. And what happens in the UK (where the videoclip was shot), gets posted on the net. Half a year later, J started working with singer songwriter Gene Thomas to create a self written feel-good summer song. MINNO had a second swinging baby: Dance with Me. The videoclip that was recorded in Amsterdam. J might be swinging in the spotlight but you can barely miss out on hottie F, shaking his booty. After hearing a demo of the first MINNO song, Dreaming, Italian producer/DJ Pops & Booms offered his mixing talent to create great remixes of both songs. Check them out and get into the groove! MINNO - Dance With Me (Pops & Booms Remix) MINNO - Dreaming (Pops & Booms Remix) The story continues... Beginning of 2014, J headed to Italy to work on some new tracks. Further away from the typical pop as before and under another artist name. History as a popstar? Step into the future. Are you curious to have a listen? JafJaf!
The Yerka project brings bicycle theft to an end - hopefully. Normally a bike is an easy target for thieves. We all know that. Esspecially in bigger cities you better watch out where to leave your bike. It doesn't matter how thick your padlock is or how frequently visited the place is where you leave your bike behind. Thieves always seem to find a way to get away with it. Three chilean engineering students have been victims of exactly the same. They teamed up and created the Yerka Project. A bicycle that once it is properly locked up, can only be stolen by destroying it. The locking mechanism is integrated in the bike's frame. You will open the frame and use the bike's saddle to lock it which will take around 20 seconds of your time. Next to this great idea the creators maintained the urban city look of the bike. The developed prototype is a mixture of speed- and mountainbike with colourful details and generates a desire for more. JafJaf!

Always in for a little adventure? Same here! How about spending the night in a robust drain pipe? We can surely recommend it as a cool experience. Dasparkhotel Bernepark, located in Bottrop (near to Essen and a small 30 minutes drive from Düsseldorf), is quite something. Actually, we already spotted the hotel last year but were sadly not able to get there. Now was the time! The hotel exists out of five drain pipes (aka five suites), each suitable for two people to spend the night. Pure simplicity from the outside and surprisingly comfortable from the inside. You actually have full headroom, storage space underneath the bed, a wide eurofoam mattress and electricity to charge your laptop, mobile phone and camera. What more do you need? We enjoyed the experience a lot. And you know what? You decide your own price! Because Dasparkhotel uses regular hotel facilities from surrounding public infrastructure, they work with the 'Pay as you wish' formula. Just give what you think it was worth and leave it in an envelope in your suite when you leave. Did we get you curious? Ofcourse we did! The hotel is opened from May till October but due to the popularity, there's a limit in still available dates. Bookings via dasparkhotel.net. JafJaf!
One of the many things Germans are good at: delicious selfmade cake and pastries. Esspecially in the northern part the so called 'Franzbrötchen', comparable with swedish cinnamon rolls, are a yummy specialty. Back from Berlin we needed to try our very own receipe. YumYum. This is what you need for about 12 pieces: For the baking sheet: baking paper Yeast dough: 250 ml milk 70 g butter 500 g of wheat flour 1 pack. Dry Yeast 70 g sugar 2 tsp vanilla sugar 1 egg (size M) a touch of salt Filling: 100 g soft butter 100 g sugar 3 tsp. cinnamon To glaze: about 2 tablespoons of milk And here is your manual: 1.Preparing: Heat the milk in a small saucepan and melt the butter in it. 2. Yeast dough: Fill the flour and yeast in a mixing bowl. Then add all other ingredients including the warm milk-butter mixture and mix everything with a mixer (dough hook). Start shortly to mix on the lowest level, then process at the highest level in about 5 min until the dough is smooth. Cover the dough and let it rise in a warm place until it has grown visibly. (around 30 min) 3. Preheat the oven. Top / bottom heat: about 180 ° C Hot air: about 160 ° C 4. Filling: Blend the butter, sugar and cinnamon with a mixer (stirring rods). Knead the dough on a lightly floured work surface and roll it out to a rectangle (about 70 x 25 cm). Afterwards spread out the cinanamon filling evenly and roll everything up from the longer side. Finally cut the role in about 12 equal trapeze-shaped cuts. Now place the cuts with the elongated side down on the baking sheet and press with a wooden spoon handle from the top to the narrow edge.. Let the rolls stay for another 10 min. 5. Sprinkle the buns with milk and then bake them. Oven inset: center Baking time: about 20 min. When finished, let the 'Franzbrötchen' cool down on a wire rack or serve them warm. Enjoy your freshly, selfmade 'Franzbrötchen'. JafJaf!
We love Berlin, Düsseldorf and Antwerp, but don't we all love New York just a little bit more? New York is with its 10 million inhabitants a city of big ideas and an even bigger landscape. NY-based filmmaker Menzkie has compiled various city moments while cruising over the Staten Island Ferry to the Top of the Rock in Midtown. Enjoy '99 Locations of New York' and let's then talk about booking our next trip to the Big Apple. Thumbs up! A trip to the Big Apple sure wouldn't hurt after seeing this.
During Summer it's very, very, very important to keep hydrated. Yes, we try to get our recommended amount of water in, but now and then a nice cocktail is welcome to take care of the thirst. Our favorite: the mojito! There are actually so many different mojitos. We lined up our favorite fruity ones from Yummly for the weekend. Do we hear a party coming up? TGIF! JafJaf! Cranberry mojito Kiwi mojito Tripple berry mojito Rhubarb mojito Watermelon mojito Coconut mango mojito
Woohooh! We're on Holiday! After our big move in February and starting a new job in March, it was time to take a little walk on the free side. That's why we decided to grab our Belgian friend, Joke, and to cruise towards the lovely Berlin. We start off with a classic one day city tour through Berlin. But instead of taking one of the tourist busses, we take the legendary bus line 100, starting from Bahnhof Zoo towards the Alexanderplatz. It stops at all the main attractions and if you get off, just minutes later the next one passes by. There even is a an app for ios that works as an audio guide for the full route. We anyway managed to check-out the Siegesäule, the Bundestag, the Kansleramt, Brandenburger Tor, the Jewish monument and the Fernsehturm at the Alexanderplatz. A great shot of culture if you ask us. Relax: Internet access is available at the reception. :-) Nhow Hotel - Berlin, Germany If you're staying in a capital city as cool as Berlin, go the extra mile and stay in a cool place. The Nhotel, that all about music should do the trick. It's like waking up in a recording studio. Amangiri Resort - Utah, USA Amangiri stands for peaceful mountain. Makes sense if you think about it, since the resort is in the middle of nowhere, tucked into a protected valley with sweeping views over colourful, stratified rock towards the Grand Staircase. Ubud Hanging Gardens - Payangan, Bali This is most definitely F's favorite. But can you blame him? Look at those infinity pools, the nature and... those infinity pools! Fairy Chimney Hotel - Goreme, Turkey Who can say they ever slept in a cave? Cavemen? This guesthouse with floor heating and a personal Hamam in each room, doesn't offer great luxury, it also has a great mountain view.
We'll have to confirm that the Warlblers from Glee do exist in real life. They study and sing a capella at Oxford University, calling themselves Out of the Blue. The boys recorded a Shakira medley and released the single with a sassy video for charity. All profits go to the Helen and Douglas House, hospice care for terminally ill children and young adults. Hips don't lie and these guys sure know how to shake them! JafJaf!
Dinner at a restaurant can taste twice as good when you have something nice to look at. Having said that, here you have six cool restaurants, spread over the globe, that will probably make you get quite hungry. The Grotto - Krabi, Thailand It couldn't get more romantic than this: this restaurant was build in an ancient cave, giving you a magnificent view over the Phranang Beach while you warm up for dinner with a lovely cocktail. Sirocco - Bangkok, Thailand Thailand doesn't seem too bad for dining. From the 63rd floor of the State Towers, the crazy metropole called Bangkok turns into a sea of lights. Sirocco is not only famous for being the world's highest open-air restaurant with a killer view, the Wagyu steak should also be divine. El Farallón - Cabo San Lucas, Mexico On your plate: fresh sea fruits, straight from the grill. In your face: the Pacific, reflecting all the colors of the beautiful sunset. Fangweng - Yichang, China Afraid of heights? If the answer is yes, than it's wise to skip Fangweng. If not, enjoy the view from this restaurant that actually hangs on a cave. Real daredevils even have the opportunity to do a bungee jump. Maybe best before eating... Grotta Palazzese - Polignano a Mare, Italy A real romance maker. You, your loved one, candlelight dinner, the Adriatic sea and a restaurant that's carved inside of a cave. Great to score some extra points. Clouds - Hamburg, Germany Who ever said you have to travel far to discover the world? Also near to home you can enjoy something incredible. At Clouds you can get a mighty good steak on the 23rd floor of the 'Tanzende Türme' and meanwhile enjoy the supplementary view over wonderful Hamburg. JafJaf!

We'd like to share a great ice-cold travel tip with you for your next journey to Stockholm. Last year we visited the great Swedish capital with J's birthday in September. Les Mills, the company of the great fitness classes like BodyJam, BodyPump and BodyCombat invited us for the filming of their new classes during the Super Saturday. As sportloving Les Mills fans we of course couldn't say no and brought our favorite Bodyjamster, Joke, along. We'll talk more about Les Mills in a later post, so be prepared. Our cool tip for your visit to Stockholm: a nightly stop in the Stockholm Ice bar by Icehotel. You will get there through the lobby of the Nordic Sea Hotel, practically next to the central station (Vasaplan 4, Stockholm city). The Icebar in Stockholm was the very first in its kind and is opened through the entire year. After putting on your cosy poncho, you can enter the bar with its chilly -5 degrees of Celsius. The complete bar exists out of ice. Ceiling, walls, the bar, ice sculptures and even the glasses that are filled with different kind of delicious longdrinks are existing out of... ice! Really worth the visit to this experience. Perfect to get an aperitif after dinner or as a "warming-up" for the Swedish nightlife. In your entry fee one drink is already included. Do reserve if you're with more than three cause it sure is a place-to-be. JafJaf!
Do you know the yearly feeling of excitement around February/March when you want to plan your Summer escape and say: „Let’s do something special this year, something we will always remember. Let’s live it up!“? Last year we most certainly did plan that special unforgettable vacation. We booked our flights to Zanzibar, the beautiful island next to Tanzania in East Africa. At arrival, our -yet to become- friend Mohammed waits for us with his taxi. „Djambo djambo, my friends! I will take you through my beautiful country“. Well, off we go. Since we wanted to see a lot of Zanzibar, we booked a Bungalow Lodge in the South for our first week, to move to the more touristic North during halftime of the Holiday. On our two hour drive towards the first stay, Mohammed decides to be a bit spontaneous and stops for a treat of freshly cut coconut. No extra charge. Could you imagine a taxi in Europe stopping to buy you a pretzel or an ice-cream? Unbelievable. During the rest of the trip towards the South, Mohammed advises us about the different excursions, the do’s and don’ts in Zanzibar and explains the sad political/economical situation of this paradise. This was the most personal and genuine taxi-ride we’ve ever taken. We directly made arrangements for the drive from the South to the North. Arriving in Paje, we drop our bags in our bungalow, get seated on the terrace, watch the pearly white deserted beach like you only see in movies and hear the relaxing sound of waves come back and forth and back and forth. Paradise. The next morning we awake with the sun having a peek in our room around six. A smile on our faces, the balcony door open and breakfast is served. While eating our delicious fruits, eggs and a local kind of bread, we decide to explore the beach while going for a run and to take the rest of the day off. Hakuna matata. :) Paje is quite known for its kite surfers. It’s not (yet) the most touristic place but surfers seam to swear for the spot since the water is flat and the waves and the wind streams are great for them. You even have some schools here to learn the right skills. Though tempted to get on a board, we decide to learn the skills at home and to definitely come back. Activities we did do are highly recommendable for an unforgettable experience. Dolphin swimming is one of them, just be prepared to get up early as hell. Autch. It was at four in the morning when a jeep was waiting for us. Still half a sleep we manage to get into the car that later on picks up Kassandra, Kay and Katie, our new Canadian friends. They talk about an addictive game called Candy crush and how they are waiting for their friends to give them a new life via Facebook. We kind of liked it and soon are all prepared to meet the dolphins… after finishing level 32 of Candy crush. You might have heard or experienced the dolphin swimming in touristic places like Florida where the animals are living in captivity. This is no such thing. In Zanzibar you have a group of wild dolphins that every morning swims towards the same spot looking for food. A speedboat brings you there and than it’s up to you to jump in the refreshing (read: ice-cold) water and to swim between twenty, thirty, maybe forty dolphins. No words can describe this. Let’s just say: it’s amazing. On our way back, we talk to the girls about joining for a sailboat trip later the week. Great idea and so we enjoyed a more traditional and touristic, but nevertheless very enjoyable, excursion that takes you to a deserted island for an all-you-can-eat seafood bbq. On the way towards the island, the boat stops for snorkeling and sunbathing on a sandbank with crystal clear blue water. We really loved our stay in Paje. It even was a bit sad to leave it behind when Mohammed was greeting us with a most friendly „Djambo djambo, friends“ when picking us up for part two of the holiday. During the three hour drive in direction of Nungwi, we took a break at a spices farm. Though we think this was really interesting, it might not be for everyone. People who like to see where their coffee comes from and never realized that pineapples actually come out of the ground are up for a treat. And anyway, it’s nice to have a stop in between the ride. Nungwi is completely different than Paje. Here you see a big clash between South and North, which doesn’t mean one of them is less enjoyable. We stayed at a new five star hotel, called Hideaway of Nungwi. Luxury and service are the keywords at this palace. A great place for relaxing, swimming, buffet surfing, … A great place to get spoiled. Look out for good deals end May till mid June when the raining season is over. We really enjoyed the great service, a classy junior suite with sea view, dips in the infinity pool and peace and quite. Ultimate relaxing-proofed. Every month you have a full moon party in Nungwi. People from all over the African continent travel to Zanzibar just for this famous parties. Of course JAF was present. And, yes, it’s really cool to have an open air party with pounding music to dance to on the beach. But don’t travel to Zanzibar just for the party. The hang-over is just as bad (or even worse) as in Germany. Autch. Thank god, the pool and its service welcomed us the next afternoon with open arms. „Can I have a wine please?“ A day trip to Stone Town was our last excursion. Interesting to see this really old town, which is an UNESCO world heritage site with arabic and indian influences. We hired a local guide to explain the history and to get to know the life of the locals. From our point of view one day at Stonetown is long enough. The last days we just enjoyed, relaxed and went to our morningly gym session (since the food was too good). Writing about it lets all the good memories come back and brings a big smile on our faces. If you are planning a trip and still need some help we are of course happy to help. We highly recommend our hotels:- Domokuchu Lodge, Paje (South).- Hideaway of Nungwi Resort & Spa, Nungwi (North). JAF-tips:- Don’t forget your injections + the yellow card to prove you had them.- Change money at arrival. Credit cards are not everywhere accepted.- Always negotiate prices. It’s more than normal.- Restaurants are cheap. No need to look for a supermarket.- Be open and talk to the locals. They are friendly and are happy to help.- Don't forget your GoPro! Djambo djambo! JafJaf!
It's not easy for men to find stylish accessories. If you want to have something nice, you're mostly obliged to look between the more high-level brands. Let's face it: women have more luck in this area. Or at least, they had... Yes, gentlemen who are looking for something unique, weither they are sporty or business, will from now on find their arm candy at Gemini Bracelets. The Belgian premium brand, founded by twin brothers Marc and Rob Beenders, started out with a personal need for nice accessories for men. Since they were not happy with the available assortment, they just created their own label. Well done, guys. First in the Gemini-line are the bracelets with beads in different trend-oriented colors. From basic black, to spring green. We really like the tiger eye brown (that makes F's eyes pop) and the tricolor. Each one has its own feel and is perfectly combinable to bring that little extra. Recently the deluxe leather wristbands, that really give that more premium understatement look, joined the family. We probably don't have to tell you that we're big fans of Gemini. We both have a beads- and a leather bracelet and feel like we're rocking them. How do you like it? Stylish men who are interested or women who just found the perfect present for their love, can get their bracelets in shops around Belgium, the Netherlands and Portugal (hopefully soon in Germany?) or online via gemini-bracelets.com. Big like! JafJaf! (more…)
Did you know that J from JAF is actually half Belgian, half Dutch? Now you do. Since his mom is originally from the Zeeland area, he's quite familiar with the nice places to go there. Today you'll benefit from that since we're giving away one of them. On the same Sunday as we did the Antwerp 10 Miles-run, we got up early to clear our heads while going for a nice family walk. An ideal location for that is 'het Veerse meer' in Zeeland, not far from the Dutch border. During Summer, this lake is ideal for surfing since there's -surprise surprise- mostly a good wind in the Netherlands. Directly next to it, there's a grass beach to lay down and to get a tan or for having a cosy picknick. There are even some picknick tables available. In Spring, this spot is perfect for a nice walk, inline skating or jogging. When we're visiting Antwerp, we always like to take the dog and go here for an hour or two. Luna always loves to run around on the paths, sniff the grass, to then jump in the water and run around again. Sometimes even in a different order.
While walking around in the Dusseldorf city center, we bumped into the shopping window of a really nice deco-shop, called Wohnplaner. Since we were quite actively looking for lights and a wardrobe, we decided to have a look inside. Happy we did. In our last apartment, we quite quickly agreed on all the nice things you could find at Ikea. Nothing wrong with that (we still have some Ikea-stuff), but this time we wanted to make it a bit more personal, a bit more us, with elements that you're not able to find in most of the nicely styled apartments of friends. When we were still living in Antwerp, we already bumped into some kind of buttons that you can attach on the wall and connect with a rope. The rope than functions as a connection to hang jackets and pictures. Cool idea but the price tag attached to it didn't make us buy it. Now, at Wohnplaner, it directly crossed our sight. They have similar buttons from HK Living in all kind of colors and sizes for a reasonable price. Now these little eye-catchers look dashing on our hallway, ready to take the jackets of guests. There are still a lot of treasures in the assortment of our newly discovered deco-store. The people there are very friendly and they even help you with interior advice. We'll definitely go back when we finally decide what kind of light to hang in the living room (it's a tough choice, no?). Already standing on our dining room, is a kind of futuristic vase, perfectly matching our more modern home. JafJaf! Was meinst ihr dazu? Passt perfekt in unser neues Heim. JafJaf!
Der Paketbote hat geklingelt... Meilenshopping! (more…)
(more…)
F speaking. Now that the move to Düsseldorf is more or less done, I took the opportunity to try my new KitchenAid Blender. I have read so much about all these green smoothies that I felt like doing it by myself, instead of paying a small fortune in a shop. And see: it is quick, easy and healthy. Exactly what I was looking for. It is the bitter substances in the raw green salads and vegetables wich you barely find in food today. Everything tastes sweet or salty, and when you think about it there is some truth in it, no? The greens stimulate your digestion and only with a good functioning digestive system, all the nutrients and viral substances can reach every cell of your body. But enough talking, let's see what you need to start the day green. :-) For a basic green smoothie you need the following: (2 glasses) spinach leaves or green salad leaves of a carrot bundle Broccoli Lemon Juice 1 Banana 1/2 Mango Water Now I just put everything in my KitchenAid Blender and fill it up with one glass of water. Then I close the blender with the cover and start it for about one minute. Finished. In general the fruits are only used to neutralize the bitterness. So you can vary with the fruits you want to use and the amount. Other possibilities are e.g. pineapple, pears or a sweeter sort of apple. For the greens you have a wide range of what you can use: rocket salad, chicory, radicchio, endives or broccoli, cauliflower and even more. As you can see, this is very easy and it is up to all of us to experiment and find our personal favorite green smoothie. There is no need to follow strict rules and measurements of how much of each ingredient is needed. Already on your way to get your blender from the basement? ;-) Have fun, and go green. JafJaf!
JAF, that's J and F! Two guys in fashion with a passion for travel, sports, gadgets, love & life! Do you remember the 8th of May, 2011? Well, we certainly do. It was a sunny Sunday. It was the day a German guy met a Belgian guy in Antwerp. It was unfortunately not as warm as it appeared to be. And it was then that the German guy gave his denim jacket to the freezing Belgian guy who only whore a t-shirt and shorts. It was the start of J&F, JAF. Meanwhile we’ve been through a lot together, living every day to the max. From renovating our dirty old apartment in Antwerp, to driving three extra days with a mobile home in trying to avoid toll roads while driving to the French coast, to visiting the magnificent Northern light in Iceland at -15°C, till everyday life while both working in Fashion. And let’s not forget about that time in Zanzibar when we swam with wild dolphins. Prrrrr! In 2013 we left our nice life in beautiful Antwerp behind to make a fresh, exciting start in Düsseldorf. After two months of camping in a 20m² hotel room we've managed to settle into our own lovely apartment. Since we’re so excited about all the new adventures coming our way, we decided to share them with you. We also hope to hear your stories and maybe someday we’ll meet in this blasting world. Great having you here on our little virtual place. Jaf Jaf! Would you like to contact us? Feedback, advertorial inquiries, questions or a cosy chat? Sounds great! Fill in the following form.
